From your understanding of Chapter 4 (Operating systems), what do you consider the major reason a computer needs an operating system?

An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages the computer's memory and processes, as well as all of its software and hardware. It also allows you to communicate with the computer without knowing how to speak the computer's language. Without an operating system, a computer is useless. Your computer's operating system (OS) manages all of the software and hardware on the computer. Most of the time, there are several different computer programs running at the same time, and they all need to access your computer's central processing unit (CPU), memory, and storage. The operating system coordinates all of this to make sure each program gets what it needs.

computer need an operating system to function.the operating system plays an important role of managing software, processes, memory and hardware.it allows a user to excute programs and communicate with the computer.it allows communication between the hardware and the software thus making it easy for task to  be completed. Operating system also allow you to comunicate with the computer without knowing how to speak to speak the computers language.

Programs running on all general purpose computers, from the largest to the smallest, require an operating system to allow all software to access memory, input / output devices and the file system.
Therefore, before any program can be run on computers, the Operating System and programs must be placed in the main memory (RAM).

The operating system(OS) is the most important software for computers. Because, operating system coordinates all operations on computer. For example we need operating system for use computer applications and programs.

An operating system is the most important software that runs on a computer. It manages the computer's memory and processes, as well as all of its software and hardware. An operating system is a set of programs that lies between applications software and the computer hardware. Conceptually the operating system software is an intermediary between the hardware and the applications software. If a computer does not have an operating system, the hardware will not work, applications cannot be entered, etc. In short, the computer would not be useful. The operating system is a very important software on the computer.

The OS provides a common set of services and methods to access the hardware and other resources of the computer which must be shared in a coordinated way between applications. It creates processes, coordinates what processes are running at any given instant, and provides a way for all processes to get access to the computer’s resources in some equitable way. There are documented access methods for application software to gain access to the services provided by the OS, and each OS has it’s own set of services, and it’s own methods for applications to access those services. When you run a program, a great deal of the time the process spends executing may actually be in code that the application has called in the OS. For instance, access to anything in the filesystem is the exclusive domain of the OS.

The computer needs an operating system because it provides the appropriate connectivity between software and hardware as well as between the hardware components, without which the user interface experience would not have a functional basis.

The operating system is responsible for direct control and management of computer hardware, basic system operations and running application programs. The reason it matters is that if multiple programs are running at the same time, it is responsible for allocating sufficient system resources to each program and ensuring that they do not conflict with each other.

The Operating system provides set of services and methods to access the hardware and other resources of the computer  that must be shared in organized  between applications.

It coordinates what processes are running ,  enables many  programs  coevally , to use the same computer as well as the same software for any kind of process of applications.
